Hello again NRHS Members, August thus far has yet to follow up July’s heat record. For me that is a good thing. But none the less, August has been a good month for the Western Kentucky Chapter. Madisonville held the last Friday Night Live street fair for the 2012 season and it was a roaring success. Cool temps, clear skies and people combined for a great evening. Dr. Bill Thomas outdid himself again with the Mobil Garden Railroad. Bill stepped up to the plate with a three tier Gauge One layout! Yes, three levels of trains were running all night much to the delight of children and adults as well. Thomas the Tank Engine is instantly recognized by everyone, The Egg Liner was a curiosity and the “old steam train” as I heard more than once was a hit. I was surprised to hear a little boy about 8 years old tell a parent about the “old steam train” and how he liked it best. Perhaps our hobby has a future after all!

As for old business, the trip to Progress Rail in Mayfield KY. is on hold pending a set date. Rich Hane will have a full report this month. The trip to Paducah and the NRHS Chapter Museum will coincide with the Mayfield trip. I will have more information concerning a possible display at the Parkway Plaza Mall during the Christmas Season. Wallace Henderson will update us on changes and effects of change as pertains to the National Organization. A National dues increase is on the horizon. Argh! But, it takes money to run a business or charity or a special interest group.

Kudos to Thomas Bryan. Thomas presented a program follow up to his presentation from last year’s visit to Rail Camp. We were treated to several photos and interesting insight to a rail scene few will ever have the privilege to see. Thomas held the audience for the better part of an hour with his photos and commentary. Several members were able to chime in and give info about various equipment in the shop area photos. It is easy to imagine the sights and sounds Steam Town has to offer not to mention the glory years when the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad ran their steam power through those very shops.

Gary Ostland….do you remember Gary? GOO as he is known on the internet is planning to show slides as my guest in November of this year. The date is not set. I will open the City Airport to rail fans for a slide show Gary says will be vintage shots from the Pacific Northwest. If you recall, Gary gave us a grand show of Milwaukee Road from the 1960’s earlier this year.

OK Members, get up and out on meeting night and attend. Bring a guest.

by Ricky Bivins, Chapter President

It is train time again everyone. The June 2012 meeting was one to remember. The business portion was short, the refreshments were tasty and a surprise was in store for all in attendance. As noted in the minutes, our very Thomas Bryan turned 19 on meeting night last month. He and everyone else were surprised with Cake and Ice Cream and the traditional Happy Birthday chorus. The cake and Ice cream was the best part though! As for the program, Steve Miller, whom also provided refreshments in addition to the unexpected birthday eats, provided the program. At first, Steve was to show the “Work’n on the Railroad” video, however, there were some protests to that so Steve decided to show a 60’s era video of trains in the mid-west area. Steve pre-staged the movie but when we tried to make a show of it, the movie went south and refused to play! So…Steve went back to work…on the railroad. The “Work’n on the Railroad” video was a good too as it turned out.

Friday Night Live, July 6th, 2012 was HOT, and I mean HOT. But, several members were on hand to man the event and all had a great time. Wally Watts and guests were entertaining fair goers from the start. Bill and Joe Thomas (Angela came by a bit latter), were hard at work on the Mobil Garden Railroad. Bill went above and beyond this time. The Two tier layout (one track ABOVE the other….bad pun), was a big, big hit with kids and adults. Oddly, the un-sceniced area of the layout was the kid’s favorite as it was under the top section. I guess kids like to look into the unknown. In this case the unknown was when will the train be back? We have one more night this year, August 10th. It would be great if many more members were to make the final call for Friday Night Live.

Wallace Henderson should have a presentation for us this month. Changes are ongoing in the National Organization. Most will not affect members but the officers will be changing how things are done in accordance with new rules and bylaws. Please take time to listen to what Wallace has to say. He has invested his time and money on our behalf. The very least we can do is “listen”!

Rich Hane will update us on the trip to Mayfield and Paducah. Thomas may have additional trips or information on the proposed trip to Evansville IN.

Is there something YOU, NRHS Member want to do? Make the arrangements and we will go!

As reported elsewhere herein, Keith Kittinger is recovering from surgery and is doing well. Jackie McCracken is recovering from her recent heart issue and is out and about. If you know of others in need of thoughts or prayer…let us know.

OK members, try to make the meeting. We need attendance numbers to rise.

Hello again NRHS Member, Welcome aboard the June, 2012 edition of our newsletter. I have several items of interest this month so let us get started.

WOW, what a fun and informative meeting we had in May. We all met in Hopkinsville KY. on May 21st for our regular meeting which was one week earlier than normal to accommodate the Memorial Day Holiday the following Monday. Our Hop’town friends set up a great program for us. We first met at the restored Louisville & Nashville Railroad Passenger Station in downtown Hopkinsville. Then we were treated to a guided tour of the L&N RR Freight Station across the street and across the track from the Passenger Station. Much of this building downstairs has been or is being renovated as living accommodations. While most if not all of the upstairs portion remains unscathed and intact. Moving around the various rooms and stairs, viewing the high ceilings and built in functions of the structure for me was great. I know I grinned a lot as I tried to imagine what it would have been like 75 year ago, working in this building. Many thanks go out to those responsible for our visit and for “saving” the structure. There are a lot of Restored or saved Passenger Stations in our world of Railroading, very few secondary structures such as this remain intact or in use. Great job Hop’town. After the business meeting we had some delightful snacks and then a “one on one” session with William Turner, Hopkinsville’s noted Historian. William gave us an update on the future release of the History of the Cadiz Railroad in a book format. A book that has grown and grown is size and scope. Kudos to William and his co-authors.

Our first Friday Night Live for 2012 in Downtown Madisonville KY went well, very well. We had several members present, Wally Watts was “under steam”, Bill, Liam, and Joe Thomas were a BIG hit with their (Bill’s) Mobil Garden Railroad, not to mention the TV/DVD combo from Bill (First Baptist Church). I stayed on the move, talking to event goers, talking on a WKTG/WFMW radio spot and meeting with Luke Short of SurfKY not to mention taking time out to hear and see my Nephew play drums (actually a trash can!) in the Grace Warehouse Stomp Team concert. I had a hoot people; I would like to see more members next month, which is the only improvement I can think of to make to the event.

The KY 68/80 Highway Bridge in back in service across KY and Barkley Lake’s. This means Rich Hane and Thomas Bryan will be looking into setting a date for our trip to Mayfield and Paducah. Be sure to tell them your thoughts and ideas for this or any trip. Or better yet, arrange a trip!

Wallace Henderson should have the latest news from National.

We have a few openings for program and refreshments available. Step up and take the helm folks.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting so let’s High Ball to Madisonville, Monday June 25th.

Hello fellow Western Kentucky Chapter, NRHS Members.

Here we are in the merry month of May. May, for our Chapter of course means we will be meeting in Hopkinsville KY. Our Hop’town friends and members annually host’s the Chapter’s monthly business meeting and always has a great meeting planned. This year is no different.

We will be gathering at the Former Hopkinsville KY Louisville & Nashville Railroad Passenger station in downtown Hopkinsville along Route 68/80.  Take exit #9, turn to the West and proceed to the traffic Islands, then make a right. The meeting place is just ahead about two blocks. The station will be on the left at the railroad crossing. Our program will be split into two parts. Everyone needs to be in attendance at the hour of 7:00 PM. We will promptly proceed across the street and track to the former L&N RR Freight House for a tour of the facility. So as to make the best use of day light we must be “on the advertised” of 7:00 PM. Then we will return to the Passenger Station for a short business meeting, refreshment and the second half of the program. This is sure to be a not to be missed event.

If you missed last month’s meeting, well, you missed a fine program from Tom Johnson on Illinois Central steam as well as the 1992 Steam trip over the ICRR KY. Division behind NKP #765. Several members were on hand and/or on the train that memorable day in September. Many of the Steam era scenes of ICRR action were readily recognized by members. After all, the Illinois Central is or was, a “Home Road”. Tom also brought the refreshments last month!

Bill Thomas wishes to revive the “for sale” portion of the newsletter. I feel this is a good idea. Check with Bill as he has the “rules” for posting any items you wish to sell or search out to purchase. Our program organizer, Thomas Bryan has come to me with “a plan” for trips etc. I have instructed Thomas to set dates, make plans and move forward. We cannot accommodate everyone when making plans so get with Thomas and put your “two cents worth” in on trip planning. Our proposed trip to Paducah and/or Mayfield hinges on the completion of the 68/80 bridge in Trigg County.

And that leads me to this! The first Friday Night Live is next month! We have made a commitment to the City of Madisonville to attend. We have plans for: Wally to set up his steam engines; to have a TV/DVD playing some sort of train video and to have a Gauge One train running on Bill Thomas’ trailer. Bill is stepping up (AGAIN) to the plate here people and putting forth a large effort. We need volunteers to help build, set up, run trains and converse with attendee’s at the three events. I humbly ask our members to “suck it up” and help out. No one has said “don’t do this” when the events were discussed at meeting time, so everyone should be a part of at least one of the events.

I will close with this: Have you presented a program or brought refreshments to a meeting? Would you?

Rick Bivins

Hello Railfan friends. Here we are at the April meeting. If you missed the March meeting, a great time was had by those in attendance. The business portion was short, the refreshments were good and the program was GREAT. Our guest program presenter, Gary Ostlund or GOO as he is known on the internet, had some absolutely fabulous photos of Milwaukee Road electrics that he took while residing in the Pacific North West. While not a long program, Gary showed us images of the locomotives and general area as he explained each scene in detail. I was totally absorbed by it. If you missed it, well shame on you!

There is not a lot to discuss this month; the officer will meet again prior to meeting night to iron out any details of the meeting. I will be purchasing the banner for our table at the upcoming Friday Night Live events which will be held in Down Town Madisonville. Bill Thomas plans to have an Out Door style layout built on his trailer to deliver at the event to go along with a TV/DVD playing train videos. These activities should make for a good time. Now, one point to make here. We need to have members present on the three nights. Our planned activities will be taxing for a couple of us to manage. Wally will have his steam engines going as well. So Members, please take time out for at least one of the event nights.

Bill needs material for the newsletter. He needs things such as photos, stories, historical notes and research etc. I am convinced our Chapter has an abundance of knowledge and history right on tap; one only has to let us know about. Remember, what seems to be a mundane story to you may be very interesting to the rest of us.

Looking ahead, we will have a very special program/tour of the Hopkinsville L&N RR Freight Depot for our May meeting. Make plans to attend.

Tom Johnson has refreshments and program this month. Tom plans to give us a choice of Illinois Central Steam Finale or Illinois Railway Museum DVD’s. Either will be very entertaining I am sure.

SO…Members, come on out Monday April 23rd at 7:00 PM and join in the fun and camaraderie. After all, this is “Your” Chapter.

by Ricky Bivins, President

OK NRHS Members, where does the time go? There is an old saying that goes: “Time is fun when you are having flies”. Wait, Kermit the Frog said that! “Time flies when you are having fun”. That’s it! Well, I have been having fun with my model train layout. The recent warm weather has sent me outside as I am sure many others have done. CSX keeps my neck in shape with all the trains running past the house, and of course March Madness ya’know. Anyhow, here we are coming up on the March Chapter meeting yet it seems like only a few days ago we were at the Depot for the February meeting. My oh my time does fly indeed. (Can an airport manager get away with saying that?)

As for the February meeting, I for one think we had a good turnout, a productive evening and an excellent program. Keith’s munchies were spot on and the video “Chicago Odyssey” from our late friend Dennis Carnal’s estate was very good. In fact, I have only seen the video briefly since the meeting night as members have been passing it around for another look. Dennis would be proud to know we are taking advantage of him! R.I.P. Dennis.

At one point during the past two meetings I expressed a need for a Program Director. Our Rail Camper Thomas Bryan has decided to take on that challenge. I “versed” Thomas to talk to the members, find out what the Chapter would like to do, where we would like to go etc. Thomas has some ideas on his plate already and I encouraged him to move forward and “to make plans”. He will be in touch with Chuck and Rich about the previously discussed trip to Paducah KY and Mayfield KY for a day of rail fanning. Of course we have the three Friday Night Live events coming up and the annual Pick Nick at the Crofton KY Veterans Memorial. Not to mention the C&W Railroad open house and a revised Christmas event. Thomas has a plate full indeed. Give him your support and encouragement Members; he has taken on a big job for the Chapter.

As viewed by the Members at the February meeting, Steve Miller has been working on the photo archive in full force. Great job Steve, keep up the good work. This is no easy task even for a computer whiz such as Steve. Kudos again Steve.

As I am sure everyone can see, we have a full year ahead of us. The only point to make now is Member Participation. Our overall Member involvement is good if one looks at the number of Members we have and the number of members present at our events. But that is a ratio of numbers. I want those not in attendance to feel as though they have missed something. That is to say, when one finds out what is going on, they resolve to “join in” the festivities. That will grow our Chapter and improve our overall effectiveness to preserve our local rail history. That is after all what we as Members resolve to do, preserve our Rail History.

We will have a guest program this month. Gary Ostland from Murray KY will present a program of slides. Gary or “GOO” as he signs his email, is very much in the know of all things Milwaukee Road. I am sure we will see much of the railroad and its territory. I met GOO last fall at Gorham IL while rail fanning the old MoPac line while in the company of Wally, Thomas and Phil Randall. Gary travels a lot in his motor home and bright red VW. The good life I would dare say. And he is willing to share with us his experiences!

I will see you “NRHS Member” on March 26, 2012.

Well hello again fellow Chapter Members. As the last meeting drew to a close January 23rd, a lot of points concerning our Chapter had been made. Better than half of the thirteen members present were at one point or another, involved it what turned out to be a very constructive discussion. I am very aware that several members were not so entertained. Others said the meeting was positive. One member said it was long overdue. It is not easy to please everyone on every aspect of being a “club” of any type. We have a singular interest, as Bob Moffet pointed out when he said, “I like trains”.

Near the end of the meeting, Chuck Hinrichs made a very good point, one that I vividly recall having been made several years ago when a discussion ensued over lengthy business portions of our meeting night. Chuck said to the effect “…then let the Officers meet before the meeting to decide issues…that’s what we elect them to do”.

The Officers will meet on February 23rd at my house at 7:00PM! The results of the meeting and decisions made there in will be presented to the members present on the 27th and if a vote is needed so it will be done. All members are invited to attend this first pre-meeting meeting. CSX may provide some entertainment just across Railroad Street and I do have some trains running on my Lionel Layout in the upstairs bay.

I asked for a volunteer to take charge of programs and coordinate trips, events etc. and to bring new event ideas to the members for consideration. No one was willing to do so! After the business portion of the meeting was over I ask 7 members at random it they had read the newsletter. I was disappointed but not surprised to learn only two had done so….one of the members asked that had not is an officer!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  It is time for “out with the old and in with the….old?” Well that is not how the saying goes but as one would expect, I have a point to make. The November, 2011 meeting drew the year to a close with election of officers. There were no changes as a result of those elections. The month of December saw our annual Christmas Dinner at “The Station” or as many of us are still in the habit of saying, “The Center”. The food from Ballard Catering was very tasty and the visit with those in attendance was great.

The next twelve months can be a banner year for our Chapter if we are so inclined to make it so. One year ago I made the statement that I would be a more aggressive President then the Chapter was used too. Rich Hane and Bob McCracken were Gentlemen as they lead our group. I promised to be a bit more demanding. As time passed I realized just how difficult it could be too balance the Chapter as far as functions and events go. Chapter participation is paramount yet difficult to achieve. Everyone has a life to tend to; our “club” is a small portion of that life. I cannot expect everyone to take time out for every event we participate in etc.

But, it would be nice to achieve a higher rate of member participation. That having been said, I have a question. What would the chapter like to achieve in 2012? I am sure there can be and will be many different answers to that very question. I plan for the Chapter to participate the City of Madisonville’s Down Town Friday Night Live again this year. This is a wonderful opportunity to reach many people and have fun doing so. Last year we relied on Wally and his steam engines which was a good draw. But as Wally pointed out, we need something more to do with trains. If I knew I could count on some help, I would like to set up an outdoor railroad display using G-gauge or Gauge-one trains. This would require a bit of track, a few trains, a power supply and effort….a lot of effort.

We know we can count on our Hopkinsville KY members for the Crofton KY Picnic and the May meeting in Hopkinsville KY. The Clayton/Watts open house in November is a given as well. But what more can the Chapter do? We have access to the rearmost (South) room of the Station to store, sort and advance our achieve. A few members are in possession of Chapter owned items that could be place in this one location to be admired etc. We could build a portable model train layout there in to display at train shows, civic events or Friday Night Live. We could use the room to…… (Fill in the blank here)!

Now back to the question: What would the Chapter like to achieve in 2012? With that I need feedback. I need to hear from Chapter Members. I NEED TO BE TOLD WHAT THE CHAPTER IS GOING TO DO!

The Western Kentucky Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society is a member only group of like-minded rail fans. We have a responsibility to the National Organization to promote and foster an interest in Railway History.

I ask you Chapter Members, are we upholding that Responsibility?

Rick Bivins

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! by Ricky Bivins, Chapter President

Let us not forget what we are and should be thankful for as we go about our daily routine.  I know I have much to be thankful for as I am sure you do as well. Last month was a very good meeting. Several members were on hand for Chapter Nominations for Officers for the upcoming 2012 year. At the end of nominations last month, there were no nominations made other than current officers holding their respective office. This month I will once again call for nominations from the floor THREE times for each office. At that point I will ask for a vote for each office. Remember, if someone wants to be an officer…speak up, a member can nominate one’s self as well.

I think everyone enjoyed the DVD presented by Tim Moore as the October program. I for one greatly enjoy the old footage of any railroad. Even if the railroad is not a favorite, the scenes and equipment of the era is always fascinating. One thing I notice time and time again about railroads in the 1920’s through the 1950’s is the rights of way. Most if not every railroad right of way is vastly different than what we see today. For example: Seldom does one see ballast to the top of the ties. Nor is the ballast heaped up the sides of the ties. The rails are “closer to the ground” if you will think of it that way. And the foliage seldom seems to encroach the rights of way. These points stick out to me as I usually look for modeling ideas when viewing a video. I think it is wonderful to have these resources on hand and available to us, which is why I have pushed to establish our archive!

And to that end I would like to inform the Chapter of a new and recent development with our meeting place. I have talked to the City of Madisonville Administration about securing and using the rear most room of our beloved L&N RR Passenger Station. This room is eleven feet by 28 feet in length and is accessible via a locking door from inside the upstairs floor. We will have sole access to this room where in we can archive, research and study materials available to us. HEY…we could even build a model train layout if so inclined! (I ask that very question while meeting with the City Administrator, Mike Franklin.) As the Chapter might expect, I will somewhat spearhead and oversee the “room”. Even if the Chapter does not want to get involved or use the space, I plan to use it. But of course it will be available at any time for Chapter use as well. I will have more on this at the meeting.

I hope to see everyone at the November meeting on Monday November 28th. We will be at the former L&N RR Passenger Train Station on West Arch Street, right behind Madisonville City Hall. Be sure to bring an item for show and tell and a guest.

Hello again Chapter Members. Well we start October on a sad note just as we did September! Former Member Jim Findley passed away earlier this month after a long illness. Jim was only 48 years young! In fact, I am 9 days older than Jim was. I met Jim in grade school at the 4-H Camp in Dawson Springs KY many years ago. We became friends when we learned through “round table discussion’s” at camp that we both liked trains. Jim and I were “in touch” off and on through the years. It is so sad that such a talented individual passed so young. In hind sight, Jim accomplished more than most will do in a long lifetime. Just as with Dennis’ passing, we never realize what we have in a friend until it is much too late!

Well, October has been a very good month otherwise. The Annual and much anticipated Picnic at Crofton KY was held on October 8th and it was a blast. I attended this year as it has been three years since my last visit to Crofton. As Steve Miller reports, attendance was low but the weather was perfect and CSX was very cooperative in sending trains our way.

Also in October, three members (Thomas, Wally & Myself) and one guest, Phil Randall aka Nortonville Phil, made a trip to Southern Illinois for some rail fanning. On Thursday October 13th, Phil and I left his house in Nortonville at 4:30 AM and headed West through Paducah and then to Ware Illinois. Wally and Thomas met up with us later in Gorham Illinois where we were greeted with overcast skies and damp surroundings. The objective of course was to see trains on the ex-Missouri Pacific line along the Mississippi River. The River Line as it is called. We were treated to about 15 trains total for a fun day of railroading that ended with sunny skies and a good breeze.

The October Meeting will see the first of two calls for nominations for Chapter Officers. The elections are to be held the following month. If you want to run for office, stand up and be heard. If you know of someone you would like to see in office, nominate them. This is YOUR CHAPTER, you can make a difference only if you take action!

Greetings Everyone.  This month is a bitter sweet month, September marks that time of year when the weather starts to change. We can experience cool temperatures at night and an occasional 90 degree day. For the most part though, very pleasant days, which are often, reflected in lower energy bills!

While this is the norm, the hurt-filled news of member and friend Dennis Carnal passing away at a young 53 years has really put a damper on the season. Our Chapter has lost more than a member with Dennis, we have lost an icon. I say that with sincere repose. Dennis could recall from memory, local history be it rail or coal mining or what ever…and then ensue a LONG discussion about same! For that alone he will be missed. At the September meeting, I will ask the Chapter to remember Dennis with a moment of silence.

I would like to use Dennis’ untimely passing as a reminder or a “wake up” call as to our Chapter Photo Archive. Steve is working on rescanning the photo’s provided us on disc and as I understand, they are of poor quality. Dennis was in possession of a large majority of the photos used in the first archive. Keith and I will be talking with his estate executor about obtaining them once again for photo coping purposes. As everyone recalls, I have “adopted” this project while I do not possess the skill or equipment necessary to properly see it through. I will rely heavily on Steve and Keith to see this through.

At the September meeting we will confirm details of the Clayton/Watts open house, the December Christmas Dinner and dare I say, ELECTIONS. That is correct folks, October will see our Chapter calling for nominations for officers and November will see the election results….that time will be upon us very soon.

Until then, remember to be safe when watching or photographing trains. Remain mindful of private property, be it the railroad of interest or land owners along the right of way. Living next to CSX’s Henderson Sub at Mortons Gap KY has opened my eyes to a problem I knew existed but had seen very little of. Motorist AND Pedestrians alike simply do not have time to wait for the train to pass…or so they think. I have not witnessed a collision as of yet (and hopefully I never will) but I have seen many close calls. One motorist was even verbal with me when I commented on her un-necessary haste…with two children in the car no less!  Rick Bivins

Hello Western Kentucky Chapter NRHS Members. My oh my, another month has come and gone… Where does the time go? I hope this August addition of the E-news Letter finds everyone well. With the recent high temperatures and allergens in the air, some of even the healthiest of people are down with ailments.

I was very impressed with Our Man Thomas Bryan and his attentive report on his time at Rail Camp. This young man has overcome what for some people would be a life challenging impairment. As a result he has come about in life with a confidence and stamina for knowledge, respect and an intelligent repose. I am proud of him and that he represented our Chapter (the first ever from our region) at Rail Camp. Well Done Thomas.

The last three weeks of the “month between the meetings” have been a productive and fun one for some of us. The most recent event our Chapter participated in was the August 12th version of Madisonville’s Friday Night Live. Wally, Thomas and Jim Bryan, Steve Miller, my Wife Kathy and I were on hand from 5:15PM until well after dark. We were set up next to the Illinois Central Railroad Centennial marker on the North side of the Court House, in the grass. We had shade, a grand view of the car show and we were easily accessible. Wally and Thomas ran several of Wally’s steam engines as visitors came and went. I gabbed with the one’s that appeared to be keenly interested or had little one’s that were. While the Chapter may or may not see a direct benefit from the time spent and brochures handed out, I feel we as a Chapter have upheld an obligation to the National Organization and the Community. Next year will provide us the same opportunity to share and spread the news of our Chapter and further promote the same. I would like to say “Many thanks to all those whom found time to attend and help out”.

Last month I suggested a work session at our meeting place, the former Louisville & Nashville Railroad Station to clean and remove weeds from the facility. Being as I did not get a robust and overwhelming amount of input from the members present that night, I took it upon myself to “organize” an impromptu work session on the following Saturday, July 30th. Kathy and I were at the Station by 7:50 AM to beat some of the heat of the day. Wally joined in just after 9:00 AM (our original planned time) and helped out with picking up what turned out to be a Ranger Pickup load of weeds and trash. We finished up by 9:30 and the place looked a lot better. I wish to say “Thank You” to Wally, whom at 79 years of age (soon to turn 80) can still work circles around a lot of punk kids I know! And wouldn’t you know it, only Wally ended up with a bad case of Poison Ivy!

Following Thomas’ report on Rail Camp, I presented a video from O Gauge Railroading Magazine. In the video was a nice story by and about Tony Lash’s three rail model train layout. I had several members comment on Mr. Lash…oddly enough, not on his fabulous layout but of his comments pertaining to his business and that he (a black man) never took advantage of government subsidy or contract, he made his business a success in the private sector. I point this out as I seem to notice the fact that this hobby and trains fans in general tend to be of a stronger moral and intelligent back ground. We can point out several of our own members that fit that moniker. Let me close by saying “I am proud to be a member and acquainted with this Chapter. Thank You.”

As we come to the end of July, the 7th month of the year perhaps it is time to reflect on a few things. The second Friday Night Live is history. Wally Watts, Thomas Bryan, Steve Miller and I had an enjoyable time entertaining passing guests during the event. Next month will be the last one for the year. Perhaps a few more members could attend and talk with people as they take a look at the display. Next month’s Friday Night Live will be held on August 12th from 6:00PM to 10:00PM. The months of June/July were also months of hosting. Bill Thomas had us as guests at his home on June 16. This was covered in our last newsletter. Keith Kittinger hosted guests at his home on Thursday July 16. Keith has a nice start to his HO Scale model train layout in his work shop. With numerous coal trains and motive power his plans to operate trains prototypically will be very doable and enjoyable.

Our Chapter has taken the reins this year so to speak. We have been getting out and getting the word out about our Chapter. Results are slow but none the less, if we do nothing we can expect nothing in return. Speaking of returns, I still believe our Photo Archive is a very strong attribute that we are not taking advantage of. Steve Miller is working on the photo disk(s) he has of the Archive. Once he has them up and running we can decide how to use and benefit from the many photo’s stored, at this point in time, just out of reach. The Archive could be our “signature” contribution to maintaining rail related history.

With even more events coming up, the year is, and has been full of opportunities to promote our local rail history. The annual Crofton Picnic hosted by our Hopkinsville KY Members, The Clayton/Watts Open House, one more Friday Night Live and possibly other visits to members homes.

And of course, Christmas is less than six months away! That’s right, we need to look ahead for our December meeting and start the decision process as to what we would like to do for the meeting, program and dinner.

To recap, the Photo Archive needs to be discussed, the final Friday Night Live event as well as the up coming events just mentioned. Jump in here people, this is a group effort. So make an effort to attend the meeting and events. One never knows just who will show up or what will be discussed.

Once again another month has rapidly slipped by and now we meet again. The May meeting was a BIG, no, HUGE success. Our Hopkinsville Hosts were most generous and provided a program that was second to none. Stan White, former President of the Cadiz Railroad was the guest speaker along with Thomas Harper and William Turner. The “point” of the program was the up coming book about the Cadiz Railroad being authored by Mr. Thomas Harper. The book promises to be both insightful as to the Cadiz Railroad and railroading in general. It is easy to forget how a small railroad or even a large railroad for that matter relies and depends on local business to survive. Stan White is I believe a third generation officer and stock holder of the Cadiz Railroad….at 89 years young! He is a delight to talk too and listen too. A grand time was had by all.

By the time this hits the Chapter Website, the up coming June edition of Madisonville KY’s annual Friday Night Live event downtown will be history. The Chapter made a commitment to set up a kiosk on the grounds of the Court House and “entertain” event goers. That entertainment was in the hands of our own Wally Watts and his Miniature Steam Engines. Wally along with our very own Thomas Bryan and I set up two of Wally’s steam engines along Main Street and I must say we had a blast….of steam! Event goers of all ages stopped by to see, hear and best of all, blow the whistle on Wally’s big Wilesco twin cylinder unit. Thomas managed the smaller but appealing Vertical unit while I conversed with on lookers. A special thanks to Danny Koeber for helping break down the display afterwards. I feel even though the Chapter turnout was three plus one, we had a successful display. Next month we will expand with an outdoor train display. Next month’s Friday Night Live will be July 8th from 6:00PM ending at 9:00PM. Please plan to attend and help out.

So month six of my tenure as Chapter President is upon us. The Chapter has been hosted by a radio station, entertained in Hopkinsville and now taken part in Madisonville Friday Night Live event. While member involvement is still low I feel we as a Chapter can hold our heads high and say “success”. But we should not stop now. There is more on the horizon folks. Two more Friday Night Live events, the Chapter Pic-nic, Clayton-Watts open house and the Christmas Dinner. Not to mention our photo archive project and of course our first time ever Rail Camper, Thomas Bryan. We are an active Chapter indeed. If I were to bring one thing to light, it would be; our Chapter needs more input from you, the membership. Attend the meeting this month and get involved.

Hello Everyone.  April Showers will Drown May Flowers…WHAT. That is not how the little ditty goes but it seems to be the case. Those same “showers” have changed a lot of travel plans of late. Some of those plans were in place for our very own members. The Rare Mileage Trips over the Illinois Central i.e. Canadian National via Paducah KY and to Princeton KY across the new Tennessee River Bridge at Kentucky Dam being one of them. Many freight trains are being diverted as well. I have seen a lot of Tri-level Auto-rack cars on the Henderson Subdivision at Mortons Gap KY. These normally run on the Texas Line between Henderson KY and Louisville KY. Not to mention some BNSF traffic. But fear not, the rains will abate, rivers will subside and rail traffic will resume.

The April meeting was very informative if you missed it. There is a lot going on at the National level of our organization. Many changes have taken place and more to come. Wallace Henderson reported many of the changes are being brought on by simple economics. The NRHS national level officers and representatives have been faced with rising cost of travel to attend the Spring and Fall board meeting and the National Convention. If left un-addressed, these rising cost will undermine the streighnth and effectiveness of said board meetings. This will weaken our National Organization and eventually affect our local Chapter as well. Wallace pointed out that he has over the years spent an average of $10,000 per year OUT OF HIS POCKET to attend these very same meetings. I was shocked by this yet it is easy to see. This years Convention is on the West Coast….The cost from our mid-west location would be staggering. These costs and continued effectiveness is the very things out National Officers are reviewing and making changes too. Wallace will have a very in-depth review in the coming months. Please make it a point to pay attention. It IS important to our Chapter and the over all health of our National Organization.

If you missed the April meeting, you also missed the conclusion of Dr. Fred Ripley’s 1980’s era slide coverage of the former Pennsylvania Railroad in Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio. I find this type of program to be very informative and very one on one. I like the idea of asking questions of the author and/or photographer about the location, time or element of the program. It is not very rewarding to ask the DVD player!

This, as you might expect, brings me to make a point…again! There should be one or two dates left for the year to sign up for a program or refreshments. SO…it is not too late to do so.

The May meeting is in Hopkinsville KY, hosted by our Hop’town members. Try to find time to be there, I assure everyone of a good time of trains, rail history and fellowship.

Hello once again railfans. I hope everyone enjoyed the March meeting and found it informative. Wally picked a good video with the Upper Mississippi Railroads. That area looks to be a Railfans Mecca.  Did you know the “term” railfan was coined by the late David P. Morgan, long time editor of Trains Magazine? I have been giving some thought to “Railfanning” lately and remembering many outings taken by local members of our chapter. Some of these events I was surprised to recall were more that 20 years ago. High speed runs in a van with the side door open while photographing one of Southern Railways many steam powered fan trips. And many jaunts up to Southern Indiana to catch a glimpse of the former Yankeetown Dock Corporation’s EMD SD-38’s hauling coal and of course their little Fairbanks Morris opposed piston switchers chugging around. Not to mention the ALCO Alligators!

Several of our members past and present and a few that have passed on made many MANY trips to Southern Illinois to see the MoPac, BN (Frisco) and of course UPRR around Chaffee, Scott City and Gorham. And of course local trips that never took us out of Hopkins County.  And how about Central City KY…back when the Illinois Central and later ICG railroad ruled the roost?

So what is the point, (You knew I had a point to make didn’t You)? How many of us have photo’s, video, audio or slides of those many trips? Where are they? Would you want to share them? I would like to take up the cause as mentioned before of growing and managing the archive of Western Kentucky rail scenes we have managed to preserve. Steve Miller has agreed to take on the task of managing the archive in Jim Pearson’s place. I will have to leave it up to them as I am not at all versed on photo management via computer. But I know it will be in capable hands.

So, If one has something of interests in the way of photo’s, maps, history, audio, video, slides or “GASP” FILM make it known and make it available. Who knows, some day our very own archive could benefit the next group of “Railfans” as to “how it was back then”!
