Chapter Meeting Notes

Monday, February 27, 2011 7 pm. at the old L&N Depot on West Arch Street, Madisonville, Ky.

Rick Bivins will present the program: Green Frogg's Chicago Odyssey, 1950's era rail scenes of Chicago, from the collection of the late Dennis Carnal. Keith Kittinger will provide refreshments and the public is invited.

Bring something for Show and Tell and maybe even an item for the raffle. Please encourage one another to attend our monthly meetings, every “squealing flange” counts!

Our March 26th program will be by guest speaker Gary Ostlund of Murray KY. Gary is retired Military and spent a lifetime in the Pacific Northwest. The Milwaukee Road is his favorite rail subject. This will be a treat so be sure to make plans to attend.

Regional Rail Notes

NC&StL Car: Although after-the-fact, this note from Bill Grady will be of interest (ed): The Kentucky Railway Museum is expected to sell the NC&StL passenger car Seabreeze that is in its collection. The buyer will have the perogative to scrap the car. If any person or entity is immediately interested in the car, contact KRM at 1-800-272-0152. The price to match or beat would be the scrap value of the car, approximately $12,000, as-is, where is. In any case, the purchase must be completed by December 28, 2011. The Seabreeze is in poor condition. Its wheel set, brakes, etc. would preclude movement of the car by rail. If purchased arrangements might be possible to keep it on KRM trackage for an extended period of time. - Bill Grady.

Ethanol Terminal for Birmingham, AL: EquityBites -- November 11, 2011 -- Ethanol producer Green Plains Renewable Energy Inc (Nasdaq:GPRE) said on Thursday that it will build, own and operate a new ethanol unit train terminal in Birmingham, Alabama.
This new terminal is being initiated by the company's wholly-owned subsidiary, BlendStar LLC.
The company added the new terminal will have 160,000 barrels of storage, will receive full 96-car unit trains of ethanol and will be served exclusively by the BNSF Railway.
With completion expected in the Q3 of 2012, the company said the terminal will provide a fully-automated rail unloading system with the initial capacity to distribute approximately 385,000 barrels of ethanol per month with 24-hour truck loading service.
Additionally, BlendStar's current Birmingham terminal will be retrofitted to handle other bio-fuels and liquid products when construction of the new unit train terminal facility is completed BlendStar operates a Nashville, TN terminal. - Chuck Hinrichs.

Green Units for Indiana RR: This was posted on Indiana Railroads Bull Session: 3 unit order for ES44ACs guessing they'll run them 2x1 DP? Unit numbers are 1912, 1982, 1986. Colors are medium blue with white diagonal stripe behind the cab. Have no idea what the significance of the varied numbers is. Answer: Road numbers represent Penn State National Championships. Units were released from GE this week and will go into service at a southern Indiana power plant. This would be entirely over the Evansville Western Railway. Units that should remain in captive service between a southern Illinois coal mine and a Mount Vernon."
Mileage Collectors

Central Coast Chapter NRHS has announced plans for a proposed trip to be powered by the ATSF 4-8-4 #3751, from Los Angeles to Arizona and return. Additional plans are in the works to double-head with the former CB&Q 2-8-2, #4960 on the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams, Arizona to the south rim of the Grand Canyon and return. The operating schedule will call for photo runs to be made on most days, freight traffic and time permitting. This eleven day steam excursion will be operated under contract with Amtrak, BNSF and the Arizona & California Railroad. Final approval and contracts are still pending. Several options will be made available in both premium and regular class which will include domes, lounges and coaches plus possibly Pullman sleepers. Patrons will be able to purchase round trip, one way or one day tickets. Proposed dates of the trip are May 12-21, 2012. For details see: http://www.goldenstaterails.com/
